For example, your organization may have a process for approval of a particular action. That basis of the process rarely changes. In the case of an application approval process, a typical process may be to: receive application request>check systems for validation>update account information and systems>notify departments>notify requestor>archive. However, it is possible that the business rules around the process may change frequently. In this example, the requirements for validation of the request may change, such as the applicant's criteria for acceptance. **When rules change, you can manage the business rules outside the process integration for the business process owner to be able to manage the changes without IT intervention. This gives much greater control over business processes to business managers.

Business rules and logic re-usable across other applications

Business rules are consumed as a Web service in the integration workflow. Since they are exposed as a Web service, they are available for use in other enterprise custom applications. The BRM can even stand alone to manage rules in your organization in other areas of your business across multiple applications.

Organize enterprise business rules sets. Create an organized repository of business rules for use across a project or organization.

Create and manage business rules. Drag and drop visual environment for business process owners to create and manage business rules. Business rules can be created without any coding in a drag-and-drop environment. Using data from message structures, business terms, and business functions, users can easily create complex business rules and define actions and periods for the rules.

Define global business rules. Organizations can set global business rules that take precedence over department level rules. This ensures the enterprise can maintain critical core standards.

Create common business terms. Organizations can define constants that can be used and reused by business process owners.

Create business functions that can be used by rules. IT staff can work with business process owners to define, call or create business functions. These functions can be used and reused in rules or actions.

Use data easily from various message structures. Business process owners can drag-and-drop data elements from different messages structures: custom defined business language defined in the XIP Editor, XML Schemas (XSD), or industry standard formats (such as HIPAA X12, HL7, GJXDM, ACORD, and others).

Define actions triggered by rules. Define actions by creating your own business function, call business functions, or call database functions as actions.

Define effective periods for rules. You can define the timeframe for use of rules, for example you can apply always or certain times of day allowing you fine control (for example, if an order comes in between business hours do one action, if not do another action)

Version control. You can control use of rules by versions, collaborate on new versions, and dynamically call various versions.

Dynamically change business rules in real-time. Business process users can change rules in real-time. The process integration will call a rule which resides a different location, giving business users more control over their processes and speeding up the time to change rules around integration since no IT intervention is required.
